Medicines for Cat Diarrhea

If your cat has diarrhea, you should immediately consult a veterinarian. However, you can administer treatment at home in case it becomes difficult for you to get a quick appointment with a veterinarian. There are certain drugs that can be taken by your pet to relieve him of the condition.

There are different causes that can be pinpointed to trigger diarrhea in cats. Depending on the cause, there are also respective drugs and other treatment that can be utilized.

1. If the diarrhea is mainly caused by food eaten, the best thing to do is to change your cat’s diet.

2. If it is caused by different intestinal parasites, such as roundworms and hookworms, you should treat your cat with an appropriate de-wormer and sanitize the kitty area. Diarrhea caused by other parasites like Tritichomonas, Coccidia, and Giardia can be cured through drugs like Ronidazole, Sulfa antibiotics, Metronidazole, or Fenbendazole, respectively. The intestinal parasite Cryptosporidia which can also cause diarrhea has no definite cure as yet.

3. If your cat’s diarrhea is due to viral infections, such as Panleukopenia, intravenous fluids and antibiotics can be administered. This should also be supported by not giving your pet food and water. If the viruses that triggered the disease are Feline Leukemia Virus, Feline Immuno-deficiency Virus, Feline Corona Virus, and Feline Infectious Peritonitis, you should just give your cat supportive care and attention as cure is not definitive.

4. Diarrhea in cats may, at times, be triggered by bacterial infection. If this is the case, antibiotics and intravenous fluids will also work.

5. If the disease is caused by cancer, chemotherapy or surgery is advised. If it is due to a pancreatic malfunction, Cobalamin can be given or the cat’s diet should be changed.

6. There is also this idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease which causes diarrhea. This can be cured through probiotics, immuno-suppressing drugs, or anti-inflammatory drugs.

7. Cat diarrhea caused by fungal infections can be cured using Itraconazole. If it is due to short bowel syndrome, Cobalamin may be given to the cat. Diarrhea caused by hyperthyroidism can be cured through Methimazone.

8. Some veterinarians also prescribe Kaopectate for the disease. DiaBac are also available for cats in gel form. Psyllium and Immodium are likewise effective. You may also use Pepcid and Xantac.
What you should do though is to try to get hold of a veterinarian for your cat to make sure that your pet will be given the appropriate medical treatment and at the right dosage.
