Home Remedies for Cats with Diarrhea

There are different causes of diarrhea in cats, and there are also cases when diarrhea will just stop on its own. But usually, when the condition is caused by certain strains of viruses or bacteria, this condition may not stop until the pet owner will help find a cure for it. The danger in diarrhea is that if it does not cease, it will cause severe dehydration in the affected cat which may lead to his death.

There are home remedies that can be given to stop diarrhea or to help remedy it.

1. Fasting
Do not give your cat any food for a day though you may provide a controlled amount of water to drink. After one day, give it bland food in the same amount that you would have given cat food. After two days, mix bland food with cat food. Regular diet can be resumed after three days.

2. Basic diet
Avoid food and other ingredients that may not be digested well by the cat. Keep dairy products away. Though cats love milk and almost anything that is made from dairy, they cannot digest these well. Additionally, avoid feeding them with foods that are laden with food coloring, dyes, and additives. You can instead feed your cat with easily digestible food such as chicken meat, rice, potatoes, pasta, or boiled hamburger.

3. Laxatives
Use bulk-forming laxatives to try to make the flow of diarrhea more normal than what it would have been. Combine the laxative of your choice with your cat’s food during the diet period.

4. Hydration
Always remember to keep your cat’s bowl full of water. He needs more fluids now that he has diarrhea. In order to fill in your cat’s body with electrolytes that he has lost during the disease, you may pour Gatorade, a re-hydrating drink, into his bowl.

5. Relaxation
Facilitate a relaxing environment for your cat. Make the surroundings as stress-free as they can be. Walk the cat around the park or the neighborhood in order to give him a little exercise.

6. Fiber diet
Feed the cat with fibrous foods. Fiber absorbs water which will surely lessen diarrhea.

7. Yogurt
Though dairy products should be avoided because they are difficult to digest, yogurt has bacteria that can help the intestine.

8. Probiotics
These contain bacteria that can also help the intestine. They may even be able to cure minor diarrhea in one day alone.

9. Sanitation
Cleanliness will always promote good health for you and your pets, and this applies to a majority of diseases and medical conditions.
